Biography

Bruno Glaus, born in Uznach, Switzerland, in 1966, is a contemporary figurative painter and currently resides in Wettingen, Switzerland. He paints colorful paintings in oil, acrylic and charcoal and is best known for his figures with hats in vivid backgrounds with expressive brushstrokes.

The artist explores the theme of identity—not as something fixed, but as a fluid, multilayered construction shaped by gazes, masks, language, emotion, and physical presence. His visually charged and poetically condensed paintings delve into the psychological tensions of a fragmented contemporary world.

Oscillating between figuration and abstraction, between control and wildness, his work captures the constant interplay of creation and destruction. Bold color contrasts—such as luminous primaries like yellow and blue—are set against raw overpaintings, dirt-like textures, and broken structures. This contrast creates a dynamic tension that feels both raw and sensitive, instinctive and deliberate.

Gestural brushstrokes, distorted figures, symbolic layering, and psychological depth define his visual language. Crackled surfaces, freehand lines, spray marks, scribbles, and typographic elements contribute to the complexity. Text becomes a symbolic and organic part of the composition—not to explain, but to evoke.

The resulting worlds feel dreamlike and surreal, populated by grotesque animal beings, mask-like faces, and fragmented human forms. These figures are anatomically altered, emotionally charged, and imbued with a sense of vulnerability—melancholic, ironic, and vividly alive.

Bruno Glaus’s work is physical, political, and deeply psychological. Rather than telling collective stories, it expresses inner states, transformations, and emotional processes. His painting balances intuition and structure, chaos and order—developing a raw yet profoundly personal visual language.
